Crystal imperfections and inclusions; how do they affect my crystal?

Gemstones can have both external and internal flaws, often called imperfections, inclusions or natural lays.

External flaws commonly found in precious gemstones are scratches, blemishes or minor chips.

Internal flaws are also often found and are like the fingerprint of a gem; each gemstone has its own unique internal structure. Some are clear and some feature many inclusions.

Generally speaking, "flaws" refers to the inclusions such as cracks and inclusions within the gemstone. The inclusions are internal features of the gemstone, which may be solids, liquids or gases, encapsulating the crystals as they grow, or filling (or partially filling) the cleavage, cracks and fractures after the matrix material has grown.

These come in the following types; inclusions, ribbons, growth lines, cleavage, cracks, and so on.

A crystal inclusion can be a mineral crystal that is contained within the crystal. Depending on the type of minerals they are, they can be colourless (this is when another of the same crystal is embedded within the crystal), black (carbon or tourmaline), reddish (garnets), greenish (peridots) etc.

In any natural gemstones, there will be natural inclusions. For jewellery grade precious gemstones (diamond, sapphire, emerald etc), the inclusions hold significantly less value than the colour, with the colour, brightness, and cut being more crucial.

Simply put, an inclusion is any material that is trapped inside of another mineral while those minerals form. For example, crystals, liquid or gas bubbles, or even fractures caused by radioactive material in the host material may comprise gemstone inclusions. Since researchers constantly discover new inclusions and varieties, a listing of inclusions can never be complete.

So how to do they affect my crystal?

As mentioned in the case of precious gemstone jewellery inclusions are generally not preferred due to aesthetics, but when it comes to crystal healing inclusions can enhance the power of your crystal, giving it a very special and unique boost, even driving the price up on more common crystal types.

Some crystals that you may know that have special inclusions are:

Super Seven
Super Seven

Super Seven - Also known as melody stone or sacred stone, Super Seven is a rare crystal made up of seven minerals Amethyst, Cacoxenite, Clear Quartz, Goethite, Lepidocrocite, Rutile, and Smoky quartz.

With these energies combined it makes for a very powerful crystal!

Use this combo crystal to uncover spiritual truths and elevate your consciousness. Super Seven offers knowledge to help you find the answers to your life questions. It also allows you to connect with and learn from your past experiences and it helps create a harmonious relationship with yourself and others.

Amethyst - Healing. Increases cognitive ability, focus, and creativity.

Cacoxenite - Improves spiritual awareness and a better sense of divine purpose.

Clear quartz - Boosts energy and opens the mind and heart.

Goethite - Strengthens physical and spiritual connection.

Lepidocrocite - Improves communication and understanding between lovers and blocks negative energy.

Rutile - Reduces worry and anxiety.

Smoky quartz - Protects against negative energy and speeds up healing.

Cacoxenite - Known as the stone of ascension, Cacoxenite raises vibrations and encourages spiritual alignment. Its host crystal is often quartz or amethyst; it will then form as inclusions within that stone - this can show up in shades of reddish-orange or greenish-yellow or earthly shades of brown and gold.

Ruby Zoisite

Ruby Zoisite - Ruby Zoisite is a magical combination which can inspire greater joy and gratitude. Green Zoisite motivates development and fertility, while Ruby brings passion and vitality. Together they create a stone whose energy celebrates living in the moment and letting go of all fear. Ruby Zoisite can also help to access soul memories, making it a very useful tool for past-life work.

Golden Rutile

Golden Rutile -Rutilated Quartz or Golden Rutile is a transparent Quartz with golden yellow Rutile inclusions. This gemstone features inclusions that range from thin, sparse, and parallel, to thick, dense, and crisscrossed, and everything in-between. Each Rutilated Quartz gemstone is unique in its pattern of Rutile inclusions.

Golden Rutile helps to quicken the process of manifestation, intuition, emotional catharsis, psychic opening, consciousness expansion, and inter-dimensional travel.

It assists us in attuning to our Higher Self and helps us know if someone or a situation is not serving us.

Manifestation Quartz - Manifestation Quartz is a rare and powerful formation where fully formed “baby” quartz crystals grow inside a larger quartz point. These internal crystals are not fractures or phantoms — they are true inclusions created during the stone’s natural growth, making each piece a tiny universe of possibility. Manifestation quartz teaches you how to manifest from within.

Petroleum Quartz - Petroleum Quartz, also known as Golden Enhydros, is a rare diamond quartz with tiny drops of high energy petroleum inside. These crystals are naturally double terminated and can be seen

under a black light as they are fluorescent. The properties and energy of Petroleum Quartz are similar to Diamond Quartz or Herkimer Diamonds but with a higher energy level.

Tourmalinated Quartz
Tourmalinated Quartz

Tourmalinated Quartz - Tourmalinated Quartz is a striking natural fusion where clear or milky quartz grows around fine Black Tourmaline needles, creating dramatic inky strands suspended inside the stone. These inclusions form as the two minerals grow together, giving each piece a one‑of‑a‑kind internal landscape.

Quartz with Pyrite Suns

Quartz with Pyrite Suns- Quartz with Pyrite Suns is a striking natural pairing where clear quartz hosts the iconic radiating “sunburst” formations of pyrite. These metallic discs formed millions of years ago under intense pressure, giving them an ancient, solar, almost cosmic presence.

Rainbow Lattice - Rainbow Lattice Quartz is an extraordinary Australian discovery where clear feldspar‑rich quartz contains naturally occurring rutile and hematite inclusions arranged in a distinctive criss‑cross or “lattice” pattern. When light hits these inclusions, they flash iridescent rainbows — a phenomenon that makes each piece feel like a tiny portal of cosmic geometry.

Quantum Quattro
Quantum Quattro

Quantum Quattro - A combination of shattuckite, chrysocolla, dioptase, and malachite—embedded in a quartz matrix. The name “Quantum Quattro” reflects its four core minerals, with “quantum” hinting at its reputed ability to work on multiple levels of healing—physical, emotional, and spiritual. Discovered relatively recently compared to other gemstones, it’s gained a reputation in metaphysical circles for its potent energy and versatility.

Moss Agate - Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz, known for its distinctive inclusions that resemble moss or fern-like structures. Moss agate features unique mineral inclusions, primarily composed of manganese and iron oxides, which create its characteristic moss-like patterns. Manganese Oxide contributes to the green and brown hues often seen in moss agate. It forms dendritic patterns that mimic the appearance of moss. Iron oxides can impart various colours, including red and brown, enhancing the visual complexity of the stone.

Orire Lucky Quartz - Orire Lucky Quartz is known as a good‑fortune amplifier and features inclusions of iron oxide, hematite and other trace minerals that create internal shimmer or colour.

In summary, while inclusions may detract from the visual appeal of precious gemstones in the context of jewellery, they play a vital role in the practice of crystal healing. These unique characteristics can provide a distinctive energetic boost, making the crystal more powerful and effective for those seeking healing and transformation.

Embracing the beauty of inclusions not only enhances the understanding of the crystal's properties but also invites a deeper appreciation for the natural processes that create these remarkable stones. These natural beauties remind us that magic comes in all shapes, sizes and colours.
