Valentines Day hasn't always been celebrated as we know it. From divining though apples to running around the graveyard, we've celebrated Valentines Day in all sorts of different ways!
Here are some fun Valentine’s Day superstitions from years gone by:
A lucky kiss - To be awoken by a kiss on Valentine's Day is considered lucky.
Dream Love - If you want to dream of the person you’re destined to marry, on the eve of St. Valentine’s day take 5 bay leaves and pin them to your pillow. Attach one to each corner and the last in the middle, then go to sleep. Whoever you dream of that night, you will marry them within the coming year
Red Roses - The traditional gift of red roses can be attributed to Venus. The Roman goddess of love and beauty preferred roses, with red representing passionate love.
Graveyard Lover - There was an old superstition that if a girl went to their local graveyard at midnight on 13th February they would see a vision of their future husband. They should run around the church 12 times, chanting a prescribed poem, with the hope of conjuring a ghostly vision of the man they would go on to marry.
The Apple of your eye - Start reciting the names of potential spouses while twisting the stem of an apple. The name it snaps upon will be that of the person you’ll marry.
There is a variation of this for Halloween:
A young man or woman was to peel an apple in one long peel and throw the peel over their shoulder into a bucket of water. Then they interpreted the peel’s shape to learn about their future mate through letters of initials.
If you need more life spoilers, cut the apple in half and count its seeds to find out how many children you’ll have.
