Pendulums are used for Dowsing and gaining insight. At the most basic level they are a crystal or significant item attached to the end of a string, chain, or rope.

There are a multitude of methods to dowsing, but most include connection to your pendulum and asking it questions.

When working with a pendulum, you are really just asking questions of your higher self. The messages are sent as almost undetectable micro movements, which is why a pendulum helps us to read these movements and translate them into messages. To achieve the best results you should first program your pendulum. Make sure you are relaxed and comfortable.

Centre yourself.

You can do this by simply breathing with the intention of letting the stress out, or make it more of a ritual by lighting candles, putting on some relaxing music, or diffusing essential oils. Relax — the point here is to quiet your mind so you'll be able to connect with your higher self more easily.

Connect to the pendulum.

Holding an amethyst pendulum

Sit with your pendulum. Find a comfortable place for you to sit and begin to relax as much and you can. Hold the pendulum in your hand. Take a look at it. Connect to it's beauty, what do you love about this pendulum? Why did you choose it? To connect even further you may like to hold the pendulum near the heart for just a few seconds or breaths.

Identify your "Yes" and "No."

Firstly you will need to place your elbow on a flat surface as we get twinges in the arm, and these twinges may start pendulum movement. If your arm is supported, your answers will be more precise.

In order to work effectively with your pendulum you need to learn what your body's "yes" and "no" responses are. To establish this quickly, hold the pendulum about 20cm above the palm of your hand.

For this, you can either ask your pendulum to show you the direction of yes and base your answers on the direction given, or you can ask a few simple yes/no questions that you already know the answers to and see what the responses are. For example, you could say "My name is..."

Take note of what happens for each response.

Ask your questions.

After you have programmed your pendulum you can then proceed to ask your questions.

This is the easy part, but you must keep in mind that the pendulum can only answer simple yes/no questions. If you ask something that isn't directly a yes or no, your answer won't be clear.

When should I use a pendulum?

Whenever I've lost an item or I'm really struggling with a decision I like to use a pendulum.

You can take a moment to check in with yourself and your higher self through a series of deep breaths while holding your hand on your heart. After you are feeling relaxed and clear-headed you are ready to start with some basic yes/no questions to make sure you are in tune with it. Once it's proven to be giving correct answers you can then ask a question aloud and wait to see the response.

How do I go about finding and purchasing them?

Whether you're shopping online or in an actual store, you should choose a pendulum based on what speaks to you. You may like to incorporate your favourite crystals. What sparks your interest the most? Which glimmers and first catches your eye? Another helpful tip is to consider what the pendulum will be used for and pick the style based on that. Will it be love and relationship centred, or more based on inner work? Will you use it for healing and sensing energies? Or maybe to help you find something or someone?

Whichever it was, trust that you are being called to work with that stone.

The three best starter pendulums that we recommend are Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz and Amethyst.

Most importantly, follow your heart and don't overthink it.

Plus, if find that you love dowsing, you may even end up with a collection of a few pendulums for different situations!

Anything else I should know?

Like with any other crystal you decide to buy, cleanse it as soon as you can after bringing it into your home.

You can do this with sage, sound, and a variety of other smudging methods.

You can find our full range of pendulums in store or online.
